old photo of some place in china i think
like the roofline and vague tree shapes
these images evoke lost times or perhaps
things that never did exist
but they stir my nomad soul.

never tire of this baobab tree
all gnarly and squat
transferred, painted, scratched, drawn

jan 29. 2009
layering, scraping - very physical this one.
dig the history, the memory of what was -
surprises as i go further still.
could endlessly add and subtract in this way
but this one called out to stop.

love this tree image
from an old photo from my backyard
years ago.
transferred and then painted,
scraped, messed with.

the daily postings are farther between
with travel, life.
appreciate the comment that
really it is painting, not finishing, that i am about,
so will paint as close to daily as i can,
and finish them when they are ready.
simple.

painting every day is one thing
finishing a painting every day is another
do i post them daily even when they aren't done
just to have a post that day?
questions that arise as i go along
traveling tomorrow again.
see how the painting fits in -
will go to the LA art show to see what is out there,
visit galleries etc. ready for some fresh inspiration.

added the mesh for substance and texture
often wanting to continue with these
but not to get too labored on any one painting
they are meant to be "first thought, best thought" exercises

part three. might work this further, not sure yet.
this makes up for my 3 missing days
really want to keep up with the commitment
of a painting a day - even if they come a week late -

they complete each other -

this is part of a group of 3
i am painting at the same time
wanted more contrast with the black
feeling more expressionistic
charcoal makes for more line work
love to draw

playing with texture,

more landscapey than usual.
blogging for all the world to see
makes me self conscious in a way
sometimes more critical too
but it's good exercise all around.

missed 3 days and cancelled trip
food poisoning.
just now functioning and painting again
will make up for lost days if i can.
no energy to try new things so
the ease of familiarity feels right.

this daily blog keeps me painting, no doubt.
otherwise, could be trouble.
in nyc next week, not sure how i'll paint there
maybe collages, more travel journal-ish?
i expect they'll be different,
with some street detritus perhaps -
will see how i manage while traveling.

sun is going down so had to shoot this quickly.
the writing is almost always present as my
stream of consciousness -
back of the mind -
discursiveness.

working back and forth between the acrylic and
oil/wax combo - rarely do that, so interesting to
feel the difference in the materials so directly.
acrylic is great for the immediacy - easy to layer
quickly, no drying time.

from my website paintings, but feels
fresh again, after working with more
